PORTRAITS by Sign Painters

[03/15/2009 -- 03/21/2009]
PORTRAITS by Sign Painters

The exhibition: PORTRAITS by Sign Painters was a huge success. About 40 sign painters in and around Accra were interviewed and commissioned to paint the portrait of the most influential person in their lives in the last 50 years. The portraits were then presented in a well attended show at the Nubuke Foundation in East-Legon, Accra.

The shows focus was to draw attention to an emergent fact in the contemporary Ghanaian Art scene, which is the dreaded but anticipated end of the tradition of Commercial Sign Writer or Street painter, due to the increase in large format printing companies in the country. In spite of the hard facts, the works on display projected a certain hope and belief in themselves. All their troubles aside, the painters showed that they still look within our borders for inspiration. They painted Ghanaians who have been, and some, who still are visionaries in their fields of endeavour.

PORTRAITS by Sign Painters was commissioned and Curated by Kofi Setordji as a project of ArtHAUS/Nubuke Foundation.
